Duality: Subject and Observer
Duality: Subject and Observer
Original oil painting on canvas.
“Duality: Subject and Observer” examines the relationship between the figure being seen and the figure who sees. Set within an Edenic landscape, two women occupy the same space: one exposed and frontal, the other partially clothed and positioned just behind her, observing with quiet composure.
While the nude figure initially appears to be the subject, the second figure complicates the dynamic. Neither passive nor secondary, her presence transforms the painting into a meditation on observation itself, where witness, author, guardian, and subject begin to overlap.
At their feet, flowers and mushrooms anchor the composition symbolically, referencing themes of duality, balance, and coexistence within nature.
Rather than presenting the female form through a traditional external gaze, the work explores what happens when women control both sides of the visual exchange: the image and its interpretation, the body and the witness, the seen and the seer.
